Reuse Glass Jars
Saving the occasional jar is great way to reduce waste and eliminate the need for purchased storage containers in a lot of cases. To reuse a jar, all you have to do is wash it out and soak it in hot water to remove the label. If the water doesn't remove the label, try vinegar, baby or vegetable oil and a plastic or green Scotch-Brite scrubbie to remove it.
Check out some of the ways you can reuse glass jars courtesy of Frugal Village:
- In the Kitchen: glass jars can be used to hold rice, pasta, flour, tea, coffee, dried beans, snacks, etc. Jars usually use less space than bulky packaging. You can also reuse jars to shake gravy, as refrigerator storage containers for leftovers, or as drinking glasses. They could also be used to keep onions fresh in the fridge and keep the odor from seeping out.
- Decoration: display mementos such as seashells, small stones or sand from the beach or dried flowers or candles.
- Plants and Flowers: reuse a spare jar as a vase for cut flowers, or keep the lid and make a terrarium by layering small pebbles for drainage, adding potting soil, plants and a little bit of sheet moss. Water lightly and top with the lid.
- Gifts: you can put homemade gifts into jars for a nice presentation. Some gift ideas include homemade mixes, candies, cookies, pet treats, etc. You could also use the jar to hold craft supplies, toys, first-aid supplies, sewing or office supplies kit, cosmetics or photos.
