Six Things to Buy in January

Happy New Year!  There's much to celebrate at the start of 2012 - among them, the many deals and discounts you can find if you know where to shop and what to shop for.  Take a look at some of the best deals you'll find in the month of January:

1. Big Appliances

Many stores had older inventory in stock through the holidays while it was in demand.  At the start of the year, they'll want to get rid of this inventory to make room for newer items.  Take advantage of discounts on these especially right at the beginning of January.

2. Carpet and Flooring

Carpet is usually in high demand through the end of December because people want to spruce up their homes for the holidays.  You should therefore find that prices for carpet and flooring drop drastically in the month of January.  Kiplinger recommends taking advantage of deals before February 15th when people start receiving tax refunds and prices pick up again.

3. Furniture

New furniture tends to hit showrooms in November so you'll save anywhere from 10%-50% on your furniture purchases at most places in January. These "older" models tend to be just as good, but furniture stores will need to markdown prices to help make room for the new stuff.

4. Linens and Bedding

Since the marketing strategy of "The White Sale" began in 1878, people have depended on the new year to bring sales on white items.  That's why you'll find major discounts on white (and other) bedding, linens, towels, etc. at places like Bed Bath & Beyond in January.

5. Video Games

Most new video games are released in November and December so that they're ready for the holiday shopping rush. If you can wait until January to get these games, you'll be more likely to score them for less.

6. Wrapping Paper and Christmas Cards

Now is the time to score deals on the items you'll need for the 2012 holiday season. Help stores get rid of their 2011 holiday merchandise and you'll score some major deals for yourself.
